With the Jewish High Holidays drawing to a close, we would like to invite our many Jewish members and friends to enjoy a rich sampling of songs from the Yiddish theater. All selections are available for listening here on Classical Archives.

You will find two stellar albums of music from the Yiddish theater in the Classical Archives online library. Both are productions of the Milken Archive of Jewish Music. They are not historic recordings of old performances, but new recordings of old songs from the Yiddish stage, all lovingly performed by a cast of singers that includes sopranos Nell Snaidas and Amy Goldstein, mezzo-sopranos Joanne Borts and Elizabeth Shammash, tenors Benzion Miller, Bruce Adler, Simon Spiro and Robert Bloch, and baritone Robert Abelson. All performances are led by Elli Jaffe, who conducts the Weiner Kammerorchester.

Click, Sit Back and Listen

To help you start listening and enjoying right now, I have added the first of the two albums to a playlist that members of Classical Archives can savor by simply CLICKING HERE. Please note that the playlist is fully accessible only to Classical Archives subscribers.

Our playlist starts with “Bay Mir Bistdu Scheyn” (“I Think You Are Beautiful”) by Sholom Secunda, which is the most famous song of all from the Yiddish theater. But many other delightful surprises await your listening too, including love songs, humorous songs, nostalgically sad songs, and much, much more.

We wish all our Jewish friends – and all our members – a very joyous New Year.

As we close today’s post, we include an updated take on “Bay Mir Bistdu Scheyn.” Enjoy!
