Many people think of Vladimir Horowitz as a Russian-American pianist. But that is not the case. Horowitz was born on October 1, 1904 in Kyiv.  He studied at the Conservatory there before starting a career that took him across the world.

Listen to Horowitz Play Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen on Classical Archives

We could have chosen recordings from the Classical Archives library of Horowitz playing Rachmaninov, Chopin or Liszt (to name just a few choices). Instead, we decided that it would be just right to hear him play Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen (“Scenes from Childhood”).

There is something so right about listening to these pieces today. When Horowitz played these pieces, was he thinking about his childhood in Kyiv? Will Kyiv ever return to the kind of idyllic innocence that pervades these wondrous pieces?

We fervently hope so and we invite you to join us in our wishes and prayers.

Please note: Classical Archives members may listen to this musical selection in its entirety.
