He began a notable career as a soloist and chamber musician and then moved to America in 1903, where he joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. After returning to Europe to fight in the French army in World War I, he then returned to the United States and restarted his career as a member of the Met orchestra as well as a soloist. In 1928, he married his student Lucille Lawrence, who became a successful soloist and pedagogue whose teaching at the Manhattan School of Music and elsewhere influenced an entire generation of students to take up the harp.
